H-1B reform: New immigration<\/strong> in the United States has called for more stringent norms in the H-1B visa program<\/strong>, used by organizations to address gaps in high-skill labor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The American Tech Workforce Act of 2021<\/strong>, proposed in the US House of Representatives. Calls to end the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program <\/strong>as it mostly benefits big tech companies. By giving tax cuts and allowing them to hire workers <\/strong>at a lower cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bill was introduced by Republican Study Committee <\/strong>Chairman Jim Banks. As part of a Republican Study Committee Initiative to hold Big Tech accountable, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will have to first be approved by the House,<\/strong> and then the Senate before it may be signed into law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Big Tech is setting aside some of the most lucrative and valuable career opportunities in America<\/strong> and giving them only to foreign guest workers. Moreover, they’re cutting out Americans to save a few bucks<\/strong>. It’s domestic outsourcing,” Banks said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New US bill calls for H-1B reform<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“This stunning disregard for American workers<\/strong> and their role in our country’s future is treacherous. We should fix Big Tech’s <\/strong>incentives, so they start putting Americans first,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bill proposes to set a wage floor for H-1B visas <\/strong>at the higher end of the yearly pay paid. Moreover, to an American worker <\/strong>for that position, or $110,000<\/strong>, prioritizing giving visas. To employers who pay higher wages and limit the ability of big tech firms to contract with outsider third-party workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bill would limit the validity of visas for H-1B workers <\/strong>sponsored by third-party organizations. To one year rather than three years<\/strong>, which is the norm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2019, Amazon, Google<\/strong>, Microsoft, Facebook, IBM, and Apple were six of the best eight initial approval recipients of H-1B visas<\/strong>. This group has been at the top of the approved beneficiary’s<\/strong> recipient’s pool since at least 2014, said Banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The American Tech Workforce Act is supported by American Principles Project (APP). Also, the Federation for American Immigration Reform <\/strong>(FAIR), and NumbersUSA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The bill corrects some glaring flaws in the H-1B program<\/strong>. Which has had a severely detrimental impact on the job opportunities and wages of American workers<\/strong>. It also ends OPT, a program that allows Big Tech companies to recruit foreign students over American students<\/strong> after they graduate”.
