A US presidential advisory committee has voted to streamline the green card process<\/strong>, which, whenever implemented, will hugely lessen wait times<\/strong> for Indian candidates. The President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (PACAANHPI<\/strong>) has voted to reduce green card processing time<\/strong> to six months <\/strong>– right now. Indians face wait times of over a decade<\/strong> for their permanent residence permit. These proposals will be sent to President Joe Biden<\/strong>, who may then implement them through an executive order.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“These are recommendations and will require government action<\/strong> or agency policy changes to have an effect,” said Poorvi Chothani,<\/strong> managing partner at LawQuest, an immigration law firm<\/strong>. \u201cIf it does gain traction and even if a few changes are implemented it would benefit Indians who are in the green card queue<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Immigration and Citizenship Sub-committee<\/strong> approved a set of proposals that are currently to be introduced for additional approval. One of these is a recommendation to reduce internal processing times <\/strong>for family green card applications<\/strong>. Indian candidates face the most wait times on account of the annual country cap <\/strong>and the high number of applicants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speeding up Green Card Processing Times within 6 Months<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Others include reducing the visa backlog<\/strong> by growing staff and modernizing processes. At the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS<\/strong>) to reduce wait times, and extend premium processing services<\/strong>. Also, give automatic work permit renewals, and quickly process work permits and other immigration applications<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also suggests that the USCIS and Department of State<\/strong> issue new public charge policies. That help Asian American and Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islander immigrant families<\/strong> access health and well-being support. And partner with other federal agencies <\/strong>and community organizations to engage in outreach to these communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also suggested National Visa Center (NVC) State Department facility hire extra officials. To increase their capacity to process green card application interviews<\/strong> by 100% in 90 days<\/strong> from August 2022. And to increase Green card application visa interviews and adjudicate decisions by 150 percent<\/strong> by April 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
