Lawful permanent residents who file Form N-400 naturalization applications<\/strong> with USCIS on or after December 12, 2022, will receive a 2 years automatic extension of their green card validity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naturalization applicants who properly file an N-400 naturalization application on or after 12th December 2022<\/strong>, will receive a 24-month automatic green card extension <\/strong>from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). These candidates will receive the new extension regardless of whether they have previously filed a Form I-90 green card renewal application<\/strong>. For these applicants, USCIS will update the language on Form N-400 receipt notices. To allow for a 24-month extension<\/strong> of their green cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

N-400 receipt notice<\/strong>s issued with the new automatic extension may be presented with an expired green card. As evidence of continued legal permanent resident (LPR) status<\/strong>, according to USCIS’s announcement of the new policy. Naturalization applicants whose green cards <\/strong>are about to expire will no longer be required to take any additional steps. To show that they are still legal permanent residents <\/strong>of the United States. Naturalization candidates with expired green cards <\/strong>were required, under the previous policy. To either submit a Form I-90 renewal application (for those who filed Form N-400 less than six months<\/strong> before their green card expiration date). Or visit a local USCIS office to obtain a passport stamp<\/strong> proving their LPR status. (For those who filed Form N-400 at least six months before their green card expiration date). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These applicants shouldn’t have to take these additional steps<\/strong> with the new automatic extension of 24 months. Also, if the LPR’s naturalization application<\/strong> isn’t approved by the end of the two-year extension period. The individual might still visit a nearby USCIS office to request a passport stamp evidencing their ongoing LPR status<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
